\n\tOn 4 September 2010 the Canterbury region was hit by a 7.1 magnitude earthquake. Major damage occurred in Christchurch City and towns in the Selwyn and Waimakariri districts.

\n\tThe Canterbury Earthquake Recovery responsibility was established on 7 September 2010, with the Minister co-ordinating the Government's recovery programme.
