Understanding the details page

The purpose of this guide

The changes to Collections search include a system upgrade that means that the general appearance of the system has changed slightly, and things might not be quite where you expect them to be.

New look details page

The item details page has been rearranged, and metadata has been improved to make it easier to view the details in context. We’ve grouped details more logically to improve readability.

This guide will walk through the changes shown in the image below.

Details page for an item titled “Birds – Kiwis Publicity Caption.” The layout shows metadata such as entity type, record number, years, location, format, and access status. Highlights indicate changes: new layout, relationships grouped under one heading, removal of ‘Digital copy’ field with a “View online” link, and added “Permalink” feature.

How to view item details

Once you have done a search, click on a search result to view item details.

Archives New Zealand Collections search page showing 3,423 results for “kiwi.” The first result, “Kiwi Vids for Kiwi Kids,” is highlighted in a red box with details including repository, years, and agency.

1. Item details improved layout

We've updated the layout to make it easier to read and understand. Information is now grouped more logically, with fewer sections and details placed closer together. This should help you find what you need more quickly.

The new layout is now used for all item types, such as series, agencies, etc, so things look and feel more consistent. You might notice small differences between item types—this is because each one shows different kinds of information.

Details page for an item titled “Birds – Kiwis Publicity Caption: Kiwi, New Zealand Native Bird Photographer: G Hutchinson.” The page displays metadata including entity type, record number, years, location, format, item type, access status, view online link, access statement, preservation access, additional description, series details, accession information, and a permalink link. Two expandable sections at the bottom are labeled “Relationships” and “Record hierarchy.”

Fewer expandable sections

The expandable sections have been reduced as the information from Series; Accession Authenticity etc, have been moved up, making for a cleaner viewing experience. Reducing the need to expand multiple sections to understand an item.

2. Relationships

For convenience the section ‘Relationships’ now contains all relationship types, the relationships are still separated under subheadings. Like all details, what is displayed is dependent on the item.

Expanded “Relationships” section on the details page showing four categories: Preceding Series (1) with one linked item; Succeeding Series (2) with two linked items; Controlled by Agency (3) listing three agencies with codes and years; and Record resource relation (1) showing “Registers of correspondence” with code and years. Each entry includes name, code, and years.

Displaying relationships

Some subheadings will have more releationships than will be initially displayed.

To check how many relationships there are see the number in brackets next to the subheading.

Expanded “Controlled by Agency” section showing a list of 10 agencies with columns for Name, Code, and Years. Examples include Land Information New Zealand, Parliamentary Service, and Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. A “Load more” link is highlighted at the bottom, and the section indicates there are 13 agencies in total.
To view the relationships not currently displayed for that subheading select the Load more button, found at the bottom of the relevant section. This will display a further 10 each time the button is pressed.

3. View online and removal of Digital copy field

If an item has a digital copy, you will see the ‘View online option’, click the link next to the words to open the digital item.

Note: the field name "Digital copy available" has been removed because it was an irrelevant field.

Searching for all digital items is still possible by doing a wildcard search by entering the asterisk * into the search box and selecting search. Next, open the filter, under the heading 'Digital copy available,' select Yes, and then 'View results' to return to the filtered search results.

4. Permalink

The permalink is a new feature that provides a permanent link to the page. It can be saved or shared, making it easy to return to the page quickly.
